Technology Helps Delays

I am stuck on the train between Newcastle and London on a cold Sunday night. But all around me people are on mobiles, computers etc making arrangements to work around the delays. Hotels are being booked, taxis called for groups of impatient travelers.

This would have been inconceivable even 10 years ago. Life goes on and business is transacted. Certainly helps to lower the stress levels.

I am on my mobile talking to my wife for weather forecasts, surfing the Net to get delay info and txting as well.

Such is life in late 2010.

Mistakes

I daresay one profits more by the mistakes one makes off one's own bat than by doing the right thing on somebody's else advice. - W. Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965) [via IQuote for iPhone]

Collaboration Works

Today in the 2010's we need to collaborate more than ever. Competition at all costs is a 20th century paradigm which is over it's best by date. Successful businesses partner and collaborate with other businesses who complement their own offerings.

Don't fight over dividing the pizza (competition) but rather bake more pizzas (collaboration).

Quitting

It's always too soon to quit.

Norman Vincent Peale

I love this quote. I have been on the Net in business for a very long time. Over that time I have come to the conclusion that pereseverance is the key to business success. There are no quick steps to business success. It takes hard work and a view that you will never give up.

New iPhone Applications

I have found 2 useful business related applications for the iPhone. They are 1. The Harvard Business Review Tips (HBR Tips) and Biz Classic which is a selection of business classics from over the years. I found some of the business classics from the 1920's to be very clear and redable compared to some of the academic, MBA goggledegook that is served up today.

Towards Business Sustainability

We have to shift our emphasis from economic efficiency and materialism towards a sustainable quality of life and to healing of our society, of our people and our ecological systems.

Janet Holmes a Court

The age of rapacious growth is coming to an end as we exhaust the earth for raw materials. The businesses of the future will be balanced between profit and societal good.

Failure Breeds Success

"Each failure to sell will increase your chances for success at your next attempt."

Og Mandino

This is an important lesson for all business owners and shows the importance of attitude. Sales is a numbers game and those brave souls who do well with cold calling know that about 2 in 100 calls will give significant income opportunities. Don't focus on the failures look at the successes.

Going the Extra Mile

Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following? The extra mile.
Gary Ryan Blair

It is the extra mile that makes the difference, push yourself further than your competitors and you will win. Perseverance and stamina are two underrated attributes of people who have been successful in business.

A View on Business Problems

"I have yet to see any problem, however complicated, which, when you looked at it in the right way, did not become still more complicated. Poul Anderson."

There are no simple answers to complex problems so stop looking for quick fixes. The complexity of the business environment is what makes it exciting. If it was easy we would all be rich.

The world is full of get rich quick schemes but there is no magic shortcut Business success relies on hard work and garnered experience.

The Business Life

I'm a big believer in growth. Life is not about achievement, it's about learning and growth, and developing qualities like compassion, patience, perseverance, love, and joy, and so forth. And so if that is the case, then I think our goals should include something which stretches us.

Jack Canfield

Being in business is all about learning and growth. We grow when we fail and grow when we succeed. Every day in business is a day to learn something new. Keeping up to date in business stretches you when you set stretch goals.

Analysis before Action

Only fools rush in where angels fear to tread

The above quote is useful on a business context. The take home message is to do your homework before committing yourself to action.

Things are not always as they seem. In my time being the CIO at a medical software we had a saying, code now and repent later. In IT it is the golden rule to tie down the scope at the start.

Analyse any business process or problem before acting. Don't get confused between the symptoms and the root causes.

Go well

Hire the Smartest - they will grow your business

Hi All

I would just like to share an old business quotation with you because it can have a very real influence on the way you run your business:

When you hire people who are smarter than you are, you prove that you are smarter than they are.

R H Grant

Never be afraid
to hire the smartest people you can. Sure they may not stay long for a long time, but while they are there they will help you to look at things, and do business in a new way. Learn to leverage on the skills of others. This is not hard to do. Not all smart people are good business people and many rather work for a wage than to set up their own business. This gives you are head start. Balance your employees need for security and you can literally pick their brains.

So think big, think smart and grow your business fertilised by the smarts of your employees.

Have Fun

Business is a livelihood but it can also be fun. Look for the fun in your work day.
It may be by joshing with workmates or by sharing a joke with a client. Life is too short to spend the 80 hours you spend at work miserable (and that was a joke).

Answer your emails

Whenever one of your customers emails or calls you, answer them promptly. This is especially important for online businesses. Only a small number of your downlines in an area such as affiliate programs will contact you. From my experience these are the gems, cultivate them.

Help the Newbies

Do you remember your first tentative steps into online business? I do, it was scary and exciting at the same time. I was very lucky to have some excellent mentors at that time, who patiently answered my emails and queries and provided the way for me to succeed. They didn't try to sell up to me but they really helped and over the years I have spent thousands of dollars with them based upon the relationship they nurtured with me.

I had 2 people this week who asked me some questions and I replied, encouraged them remembering my first foray into this area.

So be kind to newbies, they may become your best clients over time. In fact the fact that they contact you or reply to your welcome emails is a very positive sign that they will end up in the 10% of your team who will contribute.

Hang in there.

Give a Helping hand

A good way of getting a good online presence is to lend a helping hand to your downline members. Downlines are all about nurturing long term relationships. Quality comes from quantity. Around 10% of my downline members perform and they are the ones I work with. That 10% drives 90% of my online business.

There is a temptation to onsell to new downline members but for the long run it is much better to get to know them first. When they trust you, you will get the on sales.

Keep well
