Mega Trend 2 - mobile devices and applications

The second mega trend that is happening is around personal and business mobility. Customers are on the move and increasingly using mobile devices. I now use my iPad as my main communication tool as it is always with me. I can write my blogs, poetry and prose; read my emails, Skype people, manage my bank accounts and read books and articles all from one device. This is liberating but from a business point of view you need to make yourself available in a much more ubiquitous way...

This trend will only grow.

I have found it a little challenging to adapt to using my iPad in a more pervasive way. I am persevering and beginning to see the business benefits, more about this in a future post.

Take a Break from your Business

A time of refreshing is essential in any human endeavour. It is important to recalibrate and get some distance from your business on a regular basis. Of course I am not sticking to my own advice writing this during my Xmas break, but I have enjoyed kicking back and relaxing. I know that three weeks off work will recharge my battery and I will come back ready to go with lots of new ideas.

Mega Trend One - Social networking

The first of the three mega trends is Social Networking. This started with sites such as MyShare and Yuwie and then extended to the uber social networking site, Facebook. Social Networking leverages the communication available on he Internet to meet friends, make business relationships and eventually use as a sales base. As humans we feel comfortable in groups and most of us (not all) enjoy this social interaction.

I use the LinkedIn tool to keep up with my business associates and IMFaceplate and Facebook to keep in touch with friends. Over time I have made cyber friends and clients with many people that I will never meet face to face, but nevertheless we have a common bond. There is a small group of marketers that I have trusted for years and when they make suggestions I carry them out based upon my previous engagement with them.

Google + is also a very powerful networking tool that I and many of my readers use.

Remember people buy more readily from people they know and trust even if the relationship is purely in cyberspace.

Laser Focus

I have been writing about being up with trends and trying new things but this needs to be balanced by a laser focus. Don't get spread thinly by attempting to change things across multiple fronts. I have had great results from CTP (Click Track Profit) by sticking to their program. Many people do not persist long enough to get the results they are seeking.

I love my garden but as every Gardiner knows you have to persevere. Expecting your plants to be in full bloom one day after planting is unrealistic. Yet this is what many people expect, join a program and get a paying down line on Day 2.

Focus your energies, persevere and the results will come.

Three Mega trends - are you ready?

Three Mega Trends in business have been identified that re changing business practice:

1. Social Networking

2. Mobile applications

and

3. Big data

Are you ready? Did you know about these 3 trends that are revolutionising the way we do business?

I will cover these three Mega Trends in my next 3 blog posting.

This stuff is exciting and full of business benefits for those who are tuned in.

I Love Failing

One of the joys of being in business is related to the opportunity to continually learn. Like most people I have received the most benefit from learning what doesn't work and trying something else.

Thomas Watson Snr, the founder of IBM, was once asked by a young man, "How can I double my success rate?". Watson's reply seems counter-intuitive but is so correct based on my experience.

So what was the answer? Well, Watson replied with the words, "Quadruple your failure rate".

So to succeed you need to fail. Most successful entrepreneurs fail a number of times before they win big. Their failures and tenacity allow them to carry on and succeed.

The take away message is to succeed you must learn from your failures and not be dejected by them. This gives you the resilience to succeed.

Traffic Exchange Ranking

This weekend I am trying out a new traffic exchange ranking system. The program is called Top-TE. Basically it gives a real time view of the top traffic exchanges at any point of time.

You place your referral splash into the constituent traffic exchanges and it then ranks the exchange by the number of TE-Traffic unique Splash Pages shown.

Make Friends then Customers

The way that business is evolving on the net is that social networking comes before business. Another way to put this is to say that social networking is per-sales activity in business parlance.

I live in a farming community where relationships are tight. Business is done with people you know and trust. A neighbors recommendation is held in high regard. The online community is also tight knit and works on the same principle. There are a small number of people that I implicitly trust on the Internet and when they say something is good I believe them.

If you want to try this out go to my homepage http://drkelp.co.uk and try out the Social Ad network that I use. Don't try and sell anything but get on the chat and makes some friends it's easy. When your ads come up then people know you and are more likely to take your recommendations.

Try it, it works.

Try something New

To win in business you need to be ahead of the game. The winner takes the spoils. I have been experimenting with Twitter and getting great results. I have four blogs and I regularly go in and twitter them. This brings a number of hits to my blogs which equals more sales.

Not everything new works but trying helps to keep your mind active and agile.

Your Customers don't care how busy you are

Your customers don’t care how hard your job is.

This is an important lesson to learn. Your customers want their project to have due attention and the fact that you are working 14 hours a day to deliver to a number of customers holds no water in their eyes. Don't over commit yourself. Many businesses have died of their success. Be prepared to say NO to jobs when you know you are struggling to keep up with your current work load.

Under Promise and Over Deliver

The under promise and over deliver is tested and true business adage. When starting in business it is crucial that you know your own limitations. If you know you can provide something in 10 days then tell the client 12 days and try to deliver in 9. Clients love early delivery but get upset when you are late. This is all part of building up business trust. Having 2 days up your sleeve can also provide a buffer in case anything goes wrong.

Elvis Presley - Keeping Close to the Accountant

We don't usually think of Elvis Presley giving financial advice but see the quote below:

I have no use for bodyguards, but I have very specific use for two highly trained certified public accountants.

Elvis Presley

Elvis had it right. Every business person needs to keep close to their accountant. It doesn't mean you will follow all of their advice, but the circumspect use of accounting advice will keep your business safe and also ensure that you are claiming all that you can.

The first bit of advice I got when I started as a manager was, Keep close to the money guy...

Long Term Business Survival

Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.
Steve Jobs

To survive in business over the long term you need to innovate to survive. Innovation doesn't necessarily mean inventing something new. It is more often a case of finding old tools to do something differently or changing a process to enhance customer experience. Don't let yourself get stale or you will notice the effects on your business endeavours.

Read, network, keep up to date with trade publications, keep alive.

Look for new Trends

The business world today is fast paced. Successful business owners are always scanning the environment for new trends. Customers follow trends so you need to as well. The secret is to find the emerging trend before your customers and ride the wave of success. Sometimes you will get it wrong, but if you know business trends you will get it right for a high percentage of the time.

I have noted over time the growth in blogs, Twitter and Facebook as avenues for connecting with customers. Savvy movers were in there 3 years ago building and perfecting the tools to attract a new cohort of customers.

I would suggest for those of you that want free video training on this go to my web site and join up for Click Track Profit. Check the link: Dr Kelps Programs that Pay

Love What You Do

While most of us are in business to make a living don't forget to love what you do.

I love this quote from Walt Disney who epitomises someone who loved his work:

Disneyland is a work of love. We didn't go into Disneyland just with the idea of making money.

We may not be as successful as Walt in translating our dream but we can certainly follow his example.
Loving what you do makes work a lot easier and keeps the blues at bay.

Treat your Staff Well

I have been very impressed by a recent American TV show where business owners go underground to see what happens at the cutting edge of their businesses. This normally means being disguised and working at the frontline.

It becomes clear very quickly what sort of employers the owners are. What struck me was that the best businesses were those where the owners took good care of the staff and the staff members responded by being dedicated and giving the business a great image with customers.

The message from the program is: Treat your staff well as they are the face of your business. On average one negative comment about your products and business will be shared with 15 other people and they will in turn tell 15 more ( that equals 225 people who hear the bad message). So one surly staff member who feels that their contribution is not valued can directly affect your bottom line. And you may not even know about it as less than 10% of your customers will complain. They will just vote with their feet.

Treating your staff well is a key driver for business success in the long term.

What's In a Name: Your Business Name and it's Success

Today I welcome Amy Torres who has written this guest contribution.

What's In a Name: Your Business Name and Its Success

You may wonder what makes a business name successful and how you can come up with one of your own. Family, friends and business associates can help you with a brainstorming session to choose a good name, but it would behoove you to follow some of the guidelines below to help you choose the best one.

Easy to Memorize

A successful business name is a memorable one. Along with being memorable, it needs to be simple to spell. You want your customers to remember your name, but if by chance they forget it and need to look it up online or in a directory, it needs to be easy to spell. If you have a name like “Theowelltheon,” no one is going to be able to find it, because how would you even spell it? Go with something unique, but intuitive to spell.

Visual Element

To have a successful business name, you need to add a visual element. After all, when someone sees your name, you want them to have an image of who you are. If a customer can associate a visual element with your name, it can aid in their ability to return to you as a customer.

Positive Connotation

A successful business name also has to have a positive connotation to it. A connotation is an emotional meaning of the word. It can be positive, negative or neutral. To have a successful name, you want to pick words with positive connotations to associate your business with. Think of it this way. If you start a business for a trucking company, you don’t want to have a small or weak name such as “Little Twig Trucking” or “Fawn Transport”. You want to go with a strong name such as “Stone River Trucking." Makes sense, right?

Connections

A successful business name is going to have something to do with what your business is about. You probably don’t have a product that will instantly be popular like Nike or Apple Computers, so you have to have a name that customers will be clued in on what your business does. If you are a trucker, include trucking in the name somewhere. If you provide lawn care, include the term lawn care. This will also help potential customers find you if they are doing a search for a business that does what you do.

A Short Name

A successful business name should be short. This goes back to the whole memorable thing. It also helps when you are doing promotions. You want a name that will fit onto a business card, flyer or ad in the paper. In a search engine, you want to have a name that can be easily found with one or two words. The shorter, the better.

Colors

When you choose a name, think about colors as well. The color will be a big part of your business logo and the items you use for promotions and website. Red indicates an aggressiveness that defines excitement, speed, and passion. Greens indicate something to do with growth, nature, or something natural.

Remember that this is your BRAND - and if you change your brand, you risk alienating all your customers! This should also be something that you can play off or otherwise use to branch into other goods or services, so keep an eye on the future!

Persistence brings Results

To make a mark in your online business you need to be a persistent person. I am very disciplined to surf everyday in the top surf programs and to do regular mailings in safelists. I know that doing this brings results. I track what I do and match signups and commissions against this work.

Forget the quick wealth schemes on the Internet - the only person who gets rich is the starter of the scam. There is no shortcut, effort in = rewards out.

Persistence allows you to keep going when the results dry up temporarily. There are lull periods, usually over mid summer, when people are not as active in being on the web. Don't let this put you off, just keep going and before long the results start again.

It is what I call the loneliness of the long distance surfer.

Have a great day.

Get your Name out there

In todays online world there are a myriad of competing businesses. What makes your business different? Do people know who YOU are? The personal touch is all important. Customers like to deal with people they know, or think that they know.

Any advertising you do needs to have your picture on it. Believe me this works. Every email you send should have a signature line that promotes your business. Get a blog like this and engage with your customers.

Business has changed over the last 30 years and the approach to digital customers needs to align with current expectations.

Safelists - an update

Some posts ago I wrote about safelists. I have been using them for some months and I am getting consistent results. Overall I am getting a 0.2% conversion rate. Doesn't sound much but it has equated to over 70 program signups. I spend about 15 minutes a day on it so it is worth doing.

I send out to around 19,000 people on my lists every 3 days.

To find out my recommended safelists look under the Tools tab by clicking on the link under my signature.

Cheers

Goals Drive Results

The old saying goes: "If you don't know where you are going, how will you know when you arrive?".

Over the last eight days I have been looking at all my business ventures and reviewing the past year and adjusting my goals for 2012 accordingly. Some of my goals were achieved to easily so this year they are stretched. Some were too stretched but I made some progress and these have been pegged down to a more realistic level. Not surprisingly some just failed to get off the ground for various reasons.

I track my goals monthly in Excel and that gives me a time for reflection and a mini review every month.

I put my success in life down to setting goals which I have done consistently all my adult life and achieving a good number of them. As well as business goals I also have personal, educational and family goals. I am a great believer in having a healthy work-life balance but as a Type A personality I have to work hard on this...

Have a great day and may you reach your goals in 2012.

Track your Traffic Exchanges from One Program

I have been using a program Called TECommand Post for some time. This program allows you to manage your credits, banners and text ads for up to 999 programs from one set of dynamic report pages.

I am sold on this as it saves me hours every week.

One of the advantages for me is that I can find where I have unassigned credits, banners and texts across hundreds of my programs. I checked today and I found tens of thousands of banner ads that I had not assigned.

I use the tool daily and assign credits from the 10 sites that have the most unassigned.

Highly recommended

Be Ethical, Kind and Focused

I have three principles for business conduct:

1. Be ethical - treat your customers, staff and suppliers in a fair and considerate way.

2. Be kind - treat your customers, staff and suppliers in a kind and friendly way.

3. Be focused - decide on what you want and then pursue it.

Simple but effective and the application of these principles has allowed me to sleep at night and to run a successful business both offline and online.

Increasingly in the coming years we will need to move from the "Greed is good" to the "Green is good" philosophy. If we don't care for our environment and allow unbridled corporate greed to take first place then we will all suffer the consequences.
